Thread galling occurs on stainless steel threaded connections during make and break. The torque builds up pressure and friction causes box and pin threads to seize. This phenomenon is known as galling.
Once these two connections have seized up from galling, the only way to remove them is by mechanical cutting. Imagine having this challenge in the offshore rig between a Range 3 pipe and a casing hanger.
Copper plating is the simple solution to reduce and prevent galling. It is by applying an electrolytically thin layer of copper coating on the box thread of an oil tool connection.
